Saylor Says MSTR Buyback Is Not a Priority as Strategy Builds $4.8B Cash Reserve

Strategy is prioritizing liquidity, STRC and its cash reserves over MSTR buybacks, while Saylor says the company could repurchase shares if they trade at a deep discount to net asset value.

Saylor Says MSTR Buyback Is Not a Priority as Strategy Builds $4.8B Cash Reserve

Strategy is putting liquidity and its preferred-stock business ahead of MSTR share buybacks, with Executive Chairman Michael Saylor saying the company could consider repurchases only if its common stock falls to a sufficiently deep discount to the value of its underlying assets.

The comments came as Strategy expanded its U.S. dollar reserve to $4.8 billion, giving the Bitcoin-focused company more flexibility to manage dividends, preferred securities, debt and potential future Bitcoin purchases.

Strategy also raised approximately $333.7 million through MSTR share sales during the week of Aug. 10–16, while leaving its Bitcoin holdings unchanged at 840,447 BTC.

Saylor leaves door open to MSTR buybacks

Saylor said an MSTR buyback could become attractive if the stock trades at a substantial discount to its net asset value.

“If MSTR is trading at a very, very deep discount to NAV, then probably you would see us do something like that.”

For now, however, Strategy is concentrating on its preferred-stock products, particularly STRC, alongside maintaining a large cash buffer.

The distinction matters because MSTR has historically been used as a mechanism for raising capital that Strategy can deploy toward Bitcoin and other corporate purposes. When the stock trades above the value of the company's assets on a per-share basis, issuing additional MSTR shares can potentially increase the amount of Bitcoin backing each common share.

Strategy CEO Phong Le defended that approach, arguing that new common-stock issuance can be beneficial when MSTR trades at a premium to the value of its underlying assets.

Strategy builds a $4.8 billion cash cushion

Strategy's latest capital-allocation decisions highlight a shift toward maintaining greater liquidity.

The company now holds approximately $4.8 billion in U.S. dollars, after adding about $150 million to its reserve during the latest week. Strategy's USD reserve duration increased to about 2.8 years.

The larger reserve is intended to give Strategy greater flexibility when markets move sharply.

Saylor said the company needs the ability to both buy and sell Bitcoin, depending on market conditions, while also having enough liquidity to support its preferred securities.

That flexibility could become particularly important for STRC, whose dividend obligations require consistent access to capital.

Strategy's broader capital framework includes a USD reserve policy, a revised STRC dividend policy, preferred-security repurchases, an MSTR repurchase authorization and a Bitcoin monetization program.

STRC becomes a key part of Strategy's capital strategy

Unlike MSTR, which is designed to provide shareholders with exposure to Strategy's Bitcoin-focused capital structure, STRC is structured around dividend income and a relatively stable share price.

Saylor said Strategy wants STRC to trade around its $100 level. The company can issue additional shares when the preferred stock trades above that level and use buybacks to support the market when it falls below.

Strategy has already been repurchasing STRC shares at discounts to their stated value.

The company said such repurchases can reduce future dividend obligations and strengthen its capital structure. Strategy has therefore increasingly treated STRC as a core component of its digital-credit business rather than simply another financing vehicle.

Strategy holds Bitcoin purchases for now

Strategy did not purchase additional Bitcoin during the week of Aug. 10–16, leaving its holdings at 840,447 BTC. The company's Bitcoin position remains one of the largest corporate cryptocurrency holdings in the world.

The decision comes as Bitcoin trades well below Strategy's average acquisition cost.

Saylor indicated that Bitcoin's position relative to its long-term trend could influence future capital allocation. When BTC trades substantially above its long-term average, Strategy may preserve more of the cash it raises. Conversely, a weaker Bitcoin price could create opportunities for additional purchases.

That approach gives the company more flexibility than maintaining a fixed Bitcoin-buying schedule.

Why the strategy matters for Bitcoin

Strategy's financing decisions can have a broader impact on Bitcoin markets because the company has historically used equity and preferred-stock issuance to raise capital for BTC purchases.

A pause in Bitcoin acquisitions means Strategy is temporarily directing more of its capital toward liquidity and capital-structure management rather than adding to its BTC holdings.

At the same time, maintaining a $4.8 billion cash reserve could give the company substantial purchasing power if Bitcoin experiences a deeper correction or if attractive opportunities emerge elsewhere in its capital structure.

The latest move also demonstrates that Strategy's Bitcoin treasury model is no longer simply about buying BTC whenever capital is available. Its growing preferred-stock business and debt obligations require the company to balance Bitcoin exposure against liquidity and financing requirements.

Saylor rejects adding operating businesses

Saylor also ruled out using Strategy's capital to acquire profitable operating companies for additional cash generation.

He argued that adding unrelated businesses would make Strategy more complicated and potentially make it harder for investors to understand and value the company.

Instead, Strategy intends to remain focused on its Bitcoin treasury strategy and its digital-credit products.

That keeps Bitcoin at the center of the company's investment thesis while allowing its capital structure to provide multiple ways to raise and deploy funds.

Long-term investors face continued volatility

Saylor acknowledged that MSTR shareholders have experienced a difficult period and argued that investors should maintain a long-term perspective.

He suggested that MSTR investors should think in terms of at least four years, with a seven- to 10-year horizon preferable.

The message comes as MSTR has faced significant pressure alongside Bitcoin's decline. Strategy's ability to issue equity, manage preferred securities and maintain large cash reserves will remain important factors in determining how aggressively it can pursue its Bitcoin strategy during future market cycles.

For now, the message from Strategy is clear: MSTR buybacks are available as an option, but they are not the priority. Liquidity, STRC and financial flexibility come first.
