Why T. Rowe Price Added Dogecoin to Its Crypto ETF

T. Rowe Price says including established memecoins such as Dogecoin reflects its active crypto investment strategy rather than a bet on internet hype.

Why T. Rowe Price Added Dogecoin to Its Crypto ETF

T. Rowe Price is taking a different approach to cryptocurrency investing by including Dogecoin (DOGE) in its actively managed multi-token crypto ETF.

The decision has attracted attention because memecoins are generally associated with speculation and social-media-driven trading. However, T. Rowe Price's digital assets team argues that excluding established memecoins simply because of their reputation would conflict with the fund's active investment strategy.

The T. Rowe Price Active Crypto ETF (TKNZ) began trading on July 16, 2026, and is designed to provide actively managed exposure to a range of leading cryptocurrencies. The firm describes it as the first actively managed multi-token spot crypto exchange-traded product available in the U.S.

Why T. Rowe Price Included Dogecoin

Blue Macellari, T. Rowe Price's head of digital asset strategy and lead portfolio manager for TKNZ, said the fund's active approach means individual cryptocurrencies should be evaluated based on their investment characteristics rather than excluded because of their label.

From that perspective, established memecoins can still qualify for consideration if their market behavior, liquidity, momentum or role within the crypto ecosystem makes them relevant to the portfolio.

The firm currently describes TKNZ as a curated portfolio that can include established tokens as well as momentum-driven opportunities.

This means Dogecoin's inclusion is not necessarily a statement that memecoins are fundamentally similar to Bitcoin or Ethereum. Instead, it reflects the fund manager's willingness to consider different parts of the cryptocurrency market when constructing the portfolio.

Dogecoin Is Only a Small Part of the Fund

Despite the attention surrounding Dogecoin, the memecoin represents only a small portion of the overall TKNZ portfolio based on the holdings described in the source material.

The fund's broader strategy remains centered on diversification across major digital assets.

T. Rowe Price says TKNZ can invest across an eligible universe that includes assets such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Binance Coin, XRP, Solana and Hyperliquid, among others.

The fund is actively managed rather than simply tracking a fixed cryptocurrency index. Its portfolio managers can adjust exposure as market conditions and investment opportunities change.

Memecoins Can Act as a Blockchain Stress Test

T. Rowe Price's argument for including established memecoins goes beyond their potential price performance.

Macellari has argued that periods of intense memecoin activity can reveal how well a blockchain network handles heavy demand.

When speculative trading surges on a network, transaction volume can increase rapidly. That can put pressure on transaction costs, settlement speeds and network reliability.

From an investment perspective, this activity can provide information about the underlying blockchain infrastructure.

A network that can continue processing transactions efficiently during periods of intense activity may demonstrate characteristics that could become increasingly important as blockchain networks support more financial applications.

Why Network Performance Matters for Stablecoins

The argument extends beyond memecoin trading.

As stablecoins become increasingly integrated into payments and financial markets, blockchain networks may eventually need to process transactions ranging from small consumer payments to very large institutional transfers.

That creates a demand for networks capable of delivering fast settlement at reasonable costs while maintaining reliability during periods of high activity.

For an active crypto investor, the ability of a blockchain to handle different types of activity can therefore become another factor when assessing its long-term potential.

TKNZ Uses Active Crypto Management

TKNZ differs from traditional single-asset crypto ETFs because its managers have discretion over the assets included in the portfolio.

T. Rowe Price says the strategy combines research and technical analysis to identify market trends, momentum opportunities and potential risks.

The fund's active structure allows its managers to adjust positions instead of simply holding cryptocurrencies according to a predetermined market-capitalization formula.

That approach is particularly relevant in crypto because market leadership can change quickly.

Bitcoin may dominate one period, while other large-cap assets, blockchain ecosystems or emerging tokens can outperform during different market cycles.

Three Factors Guide Crypto Asset Selection

The investment team evaluates cryptocurrencies using several layers of analysis.

These include:

  • Blockchain technology and token economics

  • Ecosystem growth and adoption

  • Market momentum and investor behavior

This framework allows the fund to consider both fundamental characteristics and market trends.

The approach also recognizes that crypto markets can move rapidly based on changes in investor sentiment, liquidity and network activity.

T. Rowe Price says TKNZ was created to provide professionally managed exposure to a diversified group of digital assets without requiring investors to manage the custody, trading and rebalancing of individual cryptocurrencies themselves.

T. Rowe Price Sees More Crypto ETFs Ahead

The launch of TKNZ could also signal a broader shift in the crypto ETF market.

Instead of relying exclusively on Bitcoin and Ethereum products, investors may increasingly see ETFs offering exposure to different groups of digital assets and specific crypto sectors.

T. Rowe Price itself describes TKNZ as an actively managed product designed to adapt as the digital asset market develops.

The firm says its eligible investment universe can evolve as additional assets meet applicable requirements and become available for inclusion.

This could eventually lead to more specialized crypto investment products covering large-cap assets, emerging cryptocurrencies or specific blockchain sectors.

Institutional Crypto Exposure Is Expanding

T. Rowe Price's move also demonstrates how traditional asset managers are continuing to build products around digital assets.

The firm reported approximately $1.89 trillion in assets under management as of June 30, 2026, highlighting the scale of the institution entering the crypto investment market.

TKNZ gives investors access to a professionally managed crypto portfolio through a traditional exchange-traded product structure.

The fund currently carries a 0.75% net management fee through May 31, 2027, according to T. Rowe Price's disclosures.

What Dogecoin's Inclusion Means for Crypto Investors

Dogecoin's presence in an institutional crypto ETF does not necessarily mean that memecoins have become low-risk investments.

Instead, it shows that professional asset managers are increasingly willing to evaluate established memecoins alongside other crypto assets when building diversified portfolios.

For T. Rowe Price, the key consideration is whether an asset can contribute to the portfolio based on its market characteristics, adoption, momentum and broader role in the digital asset ecosystem.

That is a notable shift from treating memecoins as an asset class that should automatically be excluded.

Conclusion

T. Rowe Price's decision to include Dogecoin in its active crypto ETF reflects the firm's broader approach to cryptocurrency investing.

Rather than excluding memecoins because of their speculative reputation, the asset manager says established tokens should be evaluated on their investment merits and potential contribution to a portfolio.

The TKNZ crypto ETF is designed to actively rotate across a range of digital assets, giving its managers flexibility to respond to changing market conditions.

As institutional participation in crypto continues to expand, the inclusion of assets such as Dogecoin could signal that professional investors are becoming more willing to evaluate the entire digital asset market rather than focusing only on Bitcoin and Ethereum.
