Strategy Highlights an 80% Market Cap Increase

Strategy, the Bitcoin-focused company behind MSTR, highlighted a sharp increase in its market capitalization over the three months ending Sept. 21.

In a post on X, Strategy said MSTR's market capitalization increased by approximately $32 billion, or 80%, over the period. The chart cited in the source article showed market capitalization rising from $39.3 billion on June 22 to $70.9 billion on Sept. 21, representing a gain of about $31.6 billion.

MSTR shares closed Sept. 21 at $168.50. The stock's increase over the same period was approximately 54%, meaning the change in Strategy's total market value was substantially larger than the increase in the share price alone.

MSTR Outpaced Bitcoin Over the Same Period

Strategy CEO Phong Le also used a rocket metaphor to describe the relative performance of the company's securities and Bitcoin.

“STRC is a passenger jet. BTC is a fighter jet. MSTR is a rocket ship. Buckle up,” Le wrote on X.

The figures supplied in the original report show how the three assets performed between June 22 and Sept. 21:

  • STRC: $88.79 to $98.78, or approximately 11%

  • Bitcoin: $64,020 to $86,620, or approximately 35%

  • MSTR: $109.46 to $168.50, or approximately 54%

Bitcoin's move also coincided with a broader rally in the cryptocurrency market. The source reported that BTC reached an intraday high of $87,395, its highest level since late January.

For readers tracking Strategy's relationship with Bitcoin, the comparison is important because MSTR is not simply a direct representation of BTC's price. The company's capital structure, Bitcoin holdings, preferred securities and share issuance can all affect how the stock trades relative to the underlying cryptocurrency.

New MSTR Shares Helped Increase Market Capitalization

One of the key factors behind Strategy's market-capitalization growth was its issuance of additional MSTR shares.

Market capitalization is calculated by multiplying a company's share price by its shares outstanding. That means a company can increase its total market capitalization through both an increase in its stock price and an increase in the number of shares outstanding.

Strategy used at-the-market, or ATM, offerings during much of the summer. These programs allow a company to sell newly issued shares into the public market at prevailing prices.

The company's SEC filings show repeated MSTR sales during the period described in the source. The largest week cited was Aug. 17–23, when Strategy sold 18,261,118 shares and generated approximately $2.0 billion in net proceeds.

Another large issuance occurred during the week ending June 28, when Strategy sold 12,669,017 shares for approximately $1.15 billion in net proceeds.

According to the source's calculation, Strategy issued approximately 61.5 million new Class A shares and generated about $6.3 billion in net proceeds between June 22 and Aug. 30.

That means part of the increase in market capitalization reflected additional equity being sold to investors rather than an increase in the value of shares that were already outstanding.

Strategy Also Managed Its Bitcoin Treasury

The proceeds raised through Strategy's capital markets activities have supported several parts of the company's broader capital strategy.

Bitcoin remains central to the company's balance sheet, but Strategy has also maintained U.S. dollar reserves and managed its preferred-stock securities.

The company's latest filing provides a snapshot of activity between Sept. 14 and Sept. 20. During that period, Strategy did not sell MSTR shares through its ATM program. At the same time, it purchased 950 BTC for $75.7 million, using USD Cash. The average purchase price was $79,670 per bitcoin.

Strategy's official announcement also confirmed that the company repurchased 1,771,238 STRC shares for $174 million during the same period.

As of Sept. 20, Strategy reported 846,000 BTC in aggregate holdings, acquired for approximately $63.80 billion, including fees and expenses. The company's average purchase price stood at approximately $75,416 per bitcoin.

STRC Repurchases Remain Part of the Capital Strategy

Strategy's capital structure extends beyond MSTR common stock.

The company has several preferred securities, including STRC, its Variable Rate Series A Perpetual Stretch Preferred Stock. Strategy has used share repurchases as part of its approach to managing that security.

During the Sept. 14–20 period, the company spent $174 million repurchasing STRC, while no MSTR, STRF, STRK or STRD shares were repurchased. Strategy's SEC filing said $875.1 million remained available under its digital credit securities repurchase program for preferred stock and $1 billion remained available under its MSTR stock repurchase program.

Strategy also reported that it used $57.4 million from its USD Reserve during the week to fund preferred-stock dividends and interest payments. Its USD Cash balance is intended for broader Bitcoin Treasury Company purposes, including Bitcoin purchases, expanding the reserve and other capital-management activities.

Strategy's Bitcoin Holdings Reach 846,000 BTC

The latest purchase brings Strategy's reported Bitcoin holdings to 846,000 BTC, reinforcing the scale of its Bitcoin treasury.

Strategy's own website currently displays the 846,000-BTC figure and identifies the holdings as approximately 4.03% of Bitcoin's total supply. The company also reports a USD Reserve of about $5.04 billion and USD Cash of roughly $1.05 billion. Strategy's Bitcoin and capital metrics provide the company's latest reported figures.

The company's Bitcoin strategy has therefore developed alongside its equity and preferred-stock programs. MSTR provides the primary common-equity vehicle, while securities such as STRC form another part of Strategy's capital structure.

What the Market Cap Increase Actually Shows

Strategy's reported 80% market-capitalization increase and 54% MSTR share-price gain illustrate why market capitalization and stock performance should not be treated as identical measurements.

The share price reflects the market value assigned to each outstanding share. Market capitalization reflects the value of all outstanding shares. When a company issues substantial amounts of new stock, its market capitalization can rise even if part of the increase comes from the additional shares themselves.

At the same time, Strategy's stock performance during the period was accompanied by a substantial increase in Bitcoin's price, while the company continued to manage its Bitcoin holdings and preferred-stock programs.

The latest SEC filing shows that Strategy's capital allocation remained active even during the week when it paused MSTR ATM sales: it bought 950 BTC, repurchased $174 million of STRC, and maintained billions of dollars in cash and reserve resources.

The three-month figures therefore capture more than a simple Bitcoin-price trade. They reflect the interaction between MSTR's share price, Strategy's changing share count, its Bitcoin holdings and its broader capital-management strategy.
