SWI Group Raises €800 Million for AI Infrastructure

SWI Group, the Euronext Amsterdam-listed investment company trading under the ticker SWICH, has raised €800 million ($894 million) from institutional investors to accelerate its expansion into artificial intelligence computing and digital infrastructure. The company said the funding will support data center development and AI computing projects across Europe and the United States.

Announced on October 12, 2026, the capital increase values SWI Group at €6.1 billion, according to the company’s official fundraising announcement. The transaction involves issuing new ordinary shares and brings the company’s total equity raised since March 2026 to more than €1 billion.

The proceeds are intended to help SWI expand its data center capacity, develop power infrastructure, deploy computing equipment and advance projects on both sides of the Atlantic. The fundraising also gives the company additional financial capacity to increase its investments in existing businesses and pursue its broader digital infrastructure strategy.

Former FTX-Linked Miner Becomes SWI Digital

A central part of SWI Group’s strategy is its acquisition and transformation of Genesis Digital Assets (GDA), a Bitcoin mining company previously connected to the FTX bankruptcy estate. SWI announced an initial investment in the business in June 2026 for approximately $500 million and subsequently increased its ownership.

By August, SWI had completed the acquisition of a controlling stake of more than 70% in Genesis Digital Assets. The business was renamed SWI Digital, reflecting the parent company’s shift toward digital infrastructure and high-performance computing. SWI’s official acquisition update confirmed the completion of the transaction and the change in strategic direction.

Rather than concentrating exclusively on cryptocurrency mining, SWI Digital is expected to convert suitable facilities into infrastructure capable of supporting artificial intelligence workloads. These facilities include power connections and data center sites that can potentially be adapted to serve customers requiring substantial computing capacity.

Why Bitcoin Mining Infrastructure Is Attracting AI Investment

The transition reflects a broader change in how some Bitcoin mining businesses evaluate their infrastructure. Mining operations require substantial electricity, specialized equipment and facilities capable of supporting continuous computing workloads. AI training and high-performance computing also require significant power and data center capacity, although their hardware, cooling and networking requirements can differ from those of Bitcoin mining.

For infrastructure owners, access to electricity and suitable sites can therefore become valuable assets beyond cryptocurrency production. Companies may seek to repurpose existing facilities for AI customers rather than rely entirely on mining revenue, which can fluctuate with Bitcoin prices, network difficulty and operating costs.

SWI is pursuing this strategy across its transatlantic portfolio. Its fundraising announcement identifies data center expansion and AI computing capacity as priorities, while its acquisition disclosures describe plans to reposition appropriate Genesis Digital Assets facilities for high-performance computing and AI workloads.

The transition does not mean that every mining site can be converted immediately. Facilities must be assessed for their power availability, cooling systems, connectivity and suitability for the hardware required by AI customers.

SWI Plans to Redirect Facilities Toward AI Computing

SWI Group’s strategy includes selling Genesis Digital Assets’ sites in Kazakhstan while focusing on facilities in the United States and Sweden for AI-related workloads, according to the supplied report. The shift is intended to move the business away from traditional Bitcoin mining and toward infrastructure designed to serve computing demand.

SWI founder and CEO Max-Hervé George has made the company’s direction clear. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, he said he had “zero interest” in Bitcoin mining. The remark underscores the company’s emphasis on data centers and computing infrastructure rather than continuing to prioritize the production of BTC.

The company has also been expanding its broader AI capabilities. Its official announcements describe plans to develop high-performance computing and GPU-as-a-service offerings, which can provide customers with access to computing resources without requiring them to build and operate all the necessary infrastructure themselves.

The success of this strategy will depend on execution, including converting facilities, securing customers and deploying the equipment needed to support AI workloads.

How the Genesis Digital Assets Deal Connects to FTX

Genesis Digital Assets has a historical connection to Alameda Research, the cryptocurrency trading firm associated with former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried. Alameda invested more than $1 billion in Genesis Digital Assets beginning in 2021 and held approximately 20% of the mining company, according to the supplied report.

FTX filed for bankruptcy in November 2022, placing its business relationships and investments under scrutiny during the subsequent bankruptcy proceedings. The Genesis investment formed part of the wider group of assets and transactions connected to the failed crypto exchange and its affiliated companies.

SWI’s acquisition and rebranding mark a new phase for the business, with its facilities now being positioned as part of a broader digital infrastructure platform. The company’s current plan centers on AI computing, data centers and power capacity rather than maintaining Bitcoin mining as its primary purpose.

What the Fundraising Means for SWI’s Strategy

The €800 million capital increase gives SWI Group additional funding to pursue its expansion across the United States and Europe. With a stated final valuation of €6.1 billion, the transaction represents a significant financing milestone as the company redirects more of its business toward digital infrastructure and AI computing.

The strategy also illustrates how assets originally developed for cryptocurrency mining may be repositioned for other computing markets. Electricity access, land and existing facilities can provide a starting point, but converting them into AI-ready data centers requires further investment and operational changes.

For SWI Group, the next stage will involve turning its infrastructure portfolio and acquisition into operational AI computing capacity. Its ability to deliver suitable facilities and attract demand will determine how effectively the company completes its transition from Bitcoin mining assets to AI-focused infrastructure.
