Bitcoin Holds Above $84,000 as ETF Outflows Top $681 Million

Bitcoin traded above $84,000 on October 12 despite $681 million in weekly outflows from US spot Bitcoin ETFs. Falling oil prices offered some relief to markets, while Treasury yields and upcoming US inflation data remained key concerns.

Bitcoin Stays Above $84,000 Despite ETF Withdrawals

Bitcoin traded above $84,000 on Monday, October 12, maintaining much of its weekend recovery despite substantial withdrawals from US-listed spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The cryptocurrency had briefly slipped to around $83,500 earlier in the session before recovering toward $84,050, close to Sunday’s high of approximately $84,145.

The recovery came after spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $681 million in net outflows during the previous week, their largest weekly withdrawal since June, according to the figures supplied by SoSoValue. Most of the withdrawals occurred on Wednesday and Thursday, interrupting a three-week period of positive weekly flows.

The latest market movement illustrates the difference between short-term price action and institutional fund flows. Bitcoin can recover even when ETF investors withdraw capital, although the outflows remain an important measure of demand for regulated investment products. Investors can track these movements through the SoSoValue US spot Bitcoin ETF dashboard.

Major Cryptocurrencies Recover Alongside Bitcoin

The recovery extended beyond Bitcoin, with several large-cap cryptocurrencies recording gains over the preceding 24 hours. Ether and XRP also traded higher, while market participants showed renewed interest in a wider range of digital assets.

Purvang Mashru, lead analyst at BitDelta India, said nine of the ten largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalization advanced during the period. Avalanche led the gains, rising 5.1% to $10.91, while Chainlink climbed 2.4% to $13.35. Solana gained 1.2%, and BNB, XRP, Dogecoin and Cardano also advanced.

The broader rebound suggests that buying activity was not limited to Bitcoin and Ether. However, gains across several assets do not establish that a sustained market rally has begun. Price movements remain sensitive to liquidity, macroeconomic conditions and changes in investor positioning.

Falling Oil Prices Ease Some Market Pressure

Oil prices moved lower as the new week began. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures fell 1.8% to $90.28, reversing part of the increase recorded the previous Thursday. The decline followed an announcement by US President Donald Trump that Russia would supply 300,000 metric tons of diesel fuel to international and domestic markets.

Trump also said Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate “energy ceasefire” intended to halt strikes on energy infrastructure. Ukrainian officials said they had not been consulted, however, and Russian military strikes on Ukraine’s energy grid reportedly continued.

The situation leaves uncertainty over whether additional fuel supplies will translate into sustained relief in energy markets. Oil prices matter to broader financial conditions because energy costs can influence inflation, household spending and business expenses. Changes in inflation expectations can, in turn, affect interest-rate expectations and demand for risk-sensitive assets such as cryptocurrencies.

ETF Outflows Keep Institutional Demand in Focus

Despite Bitcoin’s price recovery, the $681 million in weekly spot ETF outflows remained a concern for market analysts. ETF flows measure net money entering or leaving investment funds, providing one indication of demand among investors using regulated market products.

Vikram Subburaj, CEO of Giottus Exchange, described ETF flows as volatile and pointed to heavy US spot Bitcoin ETF withdrawals on October 7 and 8 as a sign of cautious institutional sentiment.

The outflows do not necessarily mean that all institutional investors are reducing their Bitcoin exposure. ETF flows represent activity within a specific group of investment products and do not capture every purchase or sale made through exchanges, private funds, direct holdings or other investment vehicles.

Nevertheless, a prolonged period of withdrawals could indicate weaker demand through the ETF channel. Traders will be watching whether subsequent sessions bring renewed inflows or extend the recent decline.

Treasury Yields Add to the Macro Uncertainty

Elevated US Treasury yields were another concern highlighted by analysts. Mashru noted that Treasury yields reached their highest levels in 24 years during the week ending October 9.

Higher yields can make interest-bearing assets more attractive relative to investments that do not generate conventional income. When borrowing costs and expected returns on government debt rise, investors may reassess the amount of risk they are willing to take in markets such as cryptocurrencies.

The relationship is not automatic: Bitcoin can rise even when yields are elevated, as the latest recovery illustrates. Still, Treasury yields remain an important part of the macroeconomic backdrop that traders monitor alongside ETF activity, the dollar and energy prices.

October 14 Inflation Report Becomes the Next Focus

The next major scheduled US macroeconomic event identified by analysts is the Consumer Price Index (CPI) report on October 14. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics’ official release calendar lists the September 2026 CPI release for Wednesday, October 14, at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time.

CPI measures changes in prices paid by consumers and is closely watched for clues about inflation and the potential direction of Federal Reserve policy. A stronger-than-expected reading could renew concerns about persistent inflation and interest rates, while a softer reading could ease some of those concerns. The market reaction will depend on the data and how it compares with expectations.

For Bitcoin, the report arrives as traders weigh three competing signals: a price recovery above $84,000, significant weekly ETF withdrawals and uncertainty surrounding energy prices and Treasury yields.

Bitcoin Traders Watch $82,000 Support

Analysts cited $82,000 as a key support level that buyers need to defend to limit the risk of a deeper decline. Support is a price area where demand has previously emerged strongly enough to slow or reverse selling pressure, although it is not guaranteed to hold.

Bitcoin’s ability to remain above $84,000 shows that the market has recovered from its earlier weakness, but the ETF outflows and broader economic uncertainty have not disappeared. A sustained recovery would need to contend with these pressures, while a move back toward $82,000 would put the identified support level under renewed scrutiny.

For now, Bitcoin remains caught between recovering prices and cautious institutional flows. The October 14 inflation report could provide a fresh macroeconomic catalyst, but its effect on crypto markets will depend on the reading and the response across financial markets.
