Bitcoin’s $80K Rally Gains Credibility as Market Liquidity Holds Strong

Bitcoin’s $80K Rally Gains Credibility as Market Liquidity Holds Strong

Bitcoin’s Rally Above $80K Shows Signs of Strong Demand

Bitcoin's latest move above $80,000 is gaining credibility as market-depth data suggests the rally was supported by substantial liquidity rather than a thin order book.

BTC climbed nearly 25% in a week, marking its strongest weekly performance in more than three years. Strong spot Bitcoin ETF demand and the U.S. Treasury's decision to expand certain bond buybacks were among the catalysts supporting the broader crypto recovery.

But another indicator is providing an important signal: Bitcoin order-book liquidity remained relatively strong throughout the rally.

Market Depth Shows Buyers Were Absorbing Supply

Market depth measures the value of buy and sell orders sitting close to an asset's current market price. Strong depth generally means large trades can be executed with less price impact.

Data tracking major spot exchanges showed that Bitcoin's average 0.5% market depth reached roughly $9.6 million on Aug. 18, when BTC began its move from around $64,000.

That was close to the approximately $9 million level recorded on Jan. 1, when Bitcoin was trading near $88,000. It was also higher than the roughly $8 million level seen in October while BTC was trading above $120,000.

By Aug. 25, when Bitcoin reached $80,000, 0.5% market depth had declined modestly to around $8.7 million.

The relatively small decline suggests that liquidity did not disappear as Bitcoin climbed sharply.

Why Liquidity Matters for Bitcoin

A major price move can sometimes occur because an asset has a thin order book. When there are fewer orders near the current price, relatively small trades can cause large price swings.

Bitcoin's recent rally presents a different picture.

Strong market depth means large amounts of capital were available around the market price while BTC was advancing. This provides additional evidence that the move was supported by genuine buying interest rather than simply being caused by a temporary liquidity shortage.

The same pattern was visible in Ether and Solana, whose 0.5% order-book depth also remained relatively strong during the recovery.

August Liquidity Makes the Move More Notable

The liquidity data is particularly important because August is traditionally a quieter period for financial markets.

Trading activity often declines during the Northern Hemisphere summer as institutional desks and market participants take holidays.

Despite those seasonal conditions, Bitcoin's market depth remained relatively stable while the asset rallied roughly 25%.

That combination suggests the market was able to absorb significant buying activity without experiencing a major deterioration in liquidity.

ETF Demand Adds Another Layer of Support

Bitcoin's move above $80,000 has also been supported by renewed interest in spot exchange-traded funds.

Institutional flows into spot Bitcoin ETFs can provide an additional source of demand because the funds acquire underlying BTC to support their products.

SEC Bitcoin ETF filings and regulatory information

The combination of ETF demand, strong order-book depth and improving broader market liquidity creates a stronger foundation for the recent rally than price action alone would suggest.

Treasury Policy Could Continue Influencing Risk Assets

Another catalyst has been the U.S. Treasury's decision to increase the maximum size of certain long-dated bond buybacks.

Lower long-term Treasury yields can affect financial conditions across markets, potentially encouraging investors to move capital toward risk assets, including cryptocurrencies.

U.S. Treasury Buyback Program

Bitcoin can also benefit when investors seek exposure to scarce assets during periods of concerns about inflation, currency debasement or financial repression.

What Comes Next for BTC?

The key question now is whether liquidity remains strong if Bitcoin continues higher.

If BTC advances while market depth, spot demand and trading volume remain healthy, the bullish case would become stronger. Conversely, a rally accompanied by rapidly declining liquidity could indicate that the market is becoming more fragile.

For now, Bitcoin's move from roughly $64,000 to above $80,000 has occurred without a major deterioration in order-book depth.

Conclusion

Bitcoin's latest rally appears to have more substance than a simple low-liquidity price spike.

With 0.5% market depth remaining relatively stable, strong ETF demand returning and macroeconomic conditions becoming more supportive of risk assets, the move above $80,000 is showing several signs of genuine market participation.

The next test will be whether Bitcoin can maintain that liquidity as traders return from the summer slowdown and the market attempts to establish a new higher trading range.
