Trump Warns of Impeachment Risk if Republicans Lose Midterms
US President Donald Trump warned Republican lawmakers on Tuesday that he could face impeachment if the party loses control of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections, a scenario that could derail his administration’s crypto policy agenda.
Speaking to House Republicans, Trump urged unity ahead of November’s vote.
“You got to win the midterms, because if we don’t win the midterms, it’s just going to be — I mean — they’ll find a reason to impeach me,” Trump said. “I’ll get impeached.”
Midterm Stakes Rise as Polls Favor Democrats
All seats in the House of Representatives and roughly one-third of the Senate are up for election in November. A Democratic takeover of either chamber would significantly constrain Republican legislative priorities during the final two years of Trump’s term.
Polling data currently shows Democrats with an edge in House races, while prediction markets reflect similar sentiment. Polymarket bettors are assigning nearly 80% odds to Democrats winning the House, though Republicans are still favored to retain control of the Senate, with a 67% probability.
Trump’s approval rating has slipped to 42%, with voters citing frustration over rising living costs and divisions within the Republican base, including controversy surrounding the handling of the Epstein files.
Crypto Legislation Could Be at Risk
A shift in congressional control could threaten key crypto legislation backed by Republicans, including the long-awaited crypto market structure bill, which aims to clarify regulatory oversight of the digital asset sector.
Senate Banking Committee Chair Tim Scott has said the bill is scheduled for another vote next week, but its prospects could dim if Democrats gain momentum ahead of the elections.
Several Democrats have already signaled willingness to challenge Trump’s crypto involvement. Representative Sean Casten and Senator Jon Ossoff have both suggested impeachment could be warranted over Trump’s crypto-related activities, including hosting a private dinner for top holders of his memecoin.

Trump’s Impeachment History
Trump was impeached twice during his first term:
- 2019: Charged with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress related to alleged pressure on Ukraine ahead of the 2020 election
- January 2021: Charged with inciting an insurrection following the Jan. 6 Capitol attack
In both cases, the Senate voted to acquit him.
Even if Democrats were to impeach Trump again, a Republican-controlled Senate could still block removal from office. However, impeachment proceedings alone could stall legislation and intensify political gridlock.
Internal GOP Divisions Complicate Crypto Agenda
Resistance to Trump’s crypto plans has also emerged within the Republican Party itself. Last year, a conservative faction of GOP lawmakers delayed progress on several crypto bills unless a ban on central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) was included.
While party leadership initially agreed to attach a CBDC ban to a must-pass defense funding bill, the provision was ultimately removed before passage. The reversal angered holdouts and highlighted internal fractures that could resurface during the midterm campaign.
Outlook
With crypto regulation hanging in the balance, the midterm elections now carry added weight for the digital asset industry. A Democratic House could revive impeachment efforts, stall crypto legislation, and deepen resistance to Trump’s pro-crypto agenda, while Republican losses would likely usher in a period of heightened political and regulatory uncertainty.
