Remote Partners with Stripe to Enable USDC Payments for Global Contractors

Global payroll provider Remote has launched a new service allowing U.S.-based companies to pay their contractors in USD Coin (USDC) across 69 countries. This feature, developed in collaboration with payment processor Stripe, aims to offer a faster, more stable compensation option for global contractors.

A Fast and Stable Payment Solution

With the integration of USDC payments, Remote is enhancing its contractor management platform, which already includes features for onboarding, invoicing, and paying contractors. The new stablecoin payment option provides a solution to the growing demand for global payroll flexibility, especially as the post-pandemic shift toward remote work continues to reshape hiring models.

"Stablecoin payments complement Remote’s powerful automation features, providing a fast and stable means of compensation," said Job van der Voort, co-founder and CEO of Remote. "We’re adding a feature that has been highly requested by our customers, enabling them to pay contractors how they prefer, while maintaining the compliance and simplicity Remote is known for."

The Role of USDC in International Payments

Contractors will receive their payments in USD Coin, a dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Circle, to a Base wallet address. Base, launched by Coinbase in August 2023, serves as a layer-2 network for faster transactions. U.S. companies paying contractors through Remote will fund the service in U.S. dollars, which are converted into USDC for payment processing.

For contractors, this offers the advantage of storing value in a stable, dollar-pegged cryptocurrency, which is especially valuable in countries where inflation or economic instability makes local currencies volatile. With USDC, contractors can avoid the delays and extra costs associated with traditional bank transfers and foreign exchange procedures, as the payments are settled almost instantly.

Stripe's Return to Crypto Payments

Stripe’s partnership with Remote marks a significant return to crypto payments for the company. After discontinuing Bitcoin (BTC) payments in 2018, Stripe resumed offering USDC payment services in 2024. The payment processor re-entered the cryptocurrency space after striking an agreement with Coinbase in June, to support USDC transactions via the Base network. Stripe began facilitating USDC payments in October.

Before this, Remote's payments through Stripe Connect were limited to the recipient's local currency, with a few European currencies available for European contractors. Now, with USDC integration, the payment service expands its capabilities and further simplifies global payroll for both employers and contractors.

Enhanced Compliance and Security

Both Remote and Stripe ensure that all payments adhere to strict compliance standards. Remote conducts Know Your Customer (KYC) verification during contractor onboarding, and Stripe applies a separate KYC process to further ensure secure transactions.

This development highlights the growing acceptance and use of stablecoins in the global financial ecosystem, particularly in the realm of cross-border payments. It enables U.S. employers to quickly and efficiently compensate their global workforce, streamlining operations while safeguarding value stability in fluctuating economic environments.

As companies and contractors continue to embrace flexible and efficient payroll solutions, Remote’s collaboration with Stripe and the integration of USDC payments mark a significant step forward in the evolution of global payroll services.
