Japanese investment firm Metaplanet has officially surpassed the Bitcoin holdings of El Salvador, following a $129 million BTC purchase announced on May 12. “Metaplanet now holds more Bitcoin than El Salvador. From humble beginnings to rivaling nation-states, we’re just getting started,” said CEO Simon Gerovich on X (formerly Twitter).
The firm’s latest purchase added 1,241 BTC to its treasury at a cost of 14.8 million yen per coin (roughly $101,843), marking Metaplanet’s highest-ever buy-in price. This acquisition brings its average purchase price to around $91,000 per Bitcoin. Metaplanet launched its aggressive Bitcoin accumulation strategy in April 2024.

In comparison, El Salvador — the first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender — holds 6,714 BTC, currently worth about $642 million, according to the nation’s Bitcoin Office.
Metaplanet’s rapid accumulation strategy has seen it secure large batches of BTC over recent months, including a 5,555 BTC purchase on May 7. April saw four separate buys totaling 18,586 BTC, and March included six acquisitions totaling 18,925 BTC, with each subsequent buy growing in size.
The firm also reported a Bitcoin Yield of 38% so far this quarter, which tracks the percentage change in BTC holdings per fully diluted share. In Q1 2025, Metaplanet achieved a yield of 95.6%.

As institutional and national interest in Bitcoin continues to grow, Metaplanet’s aggressive positioning places it among major global players — further blurring the line between private corporations and sovereign entities in crypto accumulation.
Meanwhile, MicroStrategy co-founder Michael Saylor hinted at another possible BTC acquisition. On May 12, he posted a cryptic message on X featuring the firm’s Bitcoin tracker chart with the caption, “Connect the dots.” Historically, Saylor has made similar posts just before new Bitcoin buy announcements.
MicroStrategy currently leads the corporate Bitcoin leaderboard, holding 555,450 BTC worth around $57.8 billion at current prices, according to the Saylor Tracker.
