Unitree IPO Surges 629% as Crypto Traders Underestimate Debut

Unitree IPO Opens 629% Above Its IPO Price

Unitree Robotics made a spectacular debut on the Shanghai Stock Exchange on Wednesday, with shares opening at 1,100 yuan, roughly 629% above the company's IPO price of 150.8 yuan.

The opening price valued the Chinese robotics maker at approximately 445 billion yuan, or $66 billion, dramatically exceeding the roughly $9 billion valuation implied by its IPO pricing.

The Shanghai Stock Exchange's official STAR Market provides information on the exchange's technology-focused listings and trading framework. Unitree's IPO had been planned for the STAR Market, which focuses heavily on technology and strategic emerging industries.

Crypto Traders Had Already Priced Unitree Higher

Before Shanghai's market opened, a synthetic Unitree perpetual contract trading on Hyperliquid had already placed a much higher valuation on the company than its IPO price.

The contract traded around $92 to $94 during the previous week, implying a valuation of approximately $38 billion. That was more than four times the valuation established by the IPO.

However, the actual stock opening still came in roughly 75% above the valuation implied by crypto traders. In other words, traders correctly anticipated that the IPO could be substantially more valuable than its offering price, but they still underestimated the scale of the first-day move.

How the Synthetic Unitree Market Works

The Unitree contract was not an actual share of the company. It was a perpetual future, meaning traders could speculate on Unitree's share price without owning the underlying stock.

The market was created by outside developer xyz.trade using Hyperliquid infrastructure and operates around the clock. This gave crypto traders an opportunity to express a view on Unitree's valuation before Shanghai's traditional stock market opened.

Unitree's official website provides information about its humanoid and quadruped robotics products and the company's development. Unitree Robotics says the company develops robotics systems for consumer, industrial and other applications.

Unitree's Stock Surges, Then Pulls Back

The huge opening price did not last unchanged throughout the session. Unitree shares later fell back toward 884 yuan, although they remained almost six times higher than the 150.8-yuan IPO price.

The crypto perpetual contract also remained highly active. UNITREE-USDC traded around $121 Wednesday morning after briefly moving above $140, while 24-hour trading volume reached roughly $64 million.

Open positions were worth approximately $29 million, giving the market a relatively small pool of capital compared with the company's eventual public-market valuation.

Leverage Makes the Crypto Market Riskier

The Unitree perpetual contract allows traders to use leverage of up to 10 times. That can magnify gains when prices move in the trader's favor, but it also means relatively small price movements can trigger liquidations.

Funding rates also turned negative, reaching approximately -0.13%. Negative funding generally means traders positioned for declines are paying those positioned for gains to maintain their positions.

The combination of leverage, limited liquidity and extreme price volatility makes synthetic pre-IPO markets particularly risky compared with simply buying shares after a company becomes publicly traded.

SpaceX Provided a Different Example

Unitree is the second major test this summer of crypto markets attempting to price companies before their traditional stock listings.

The earlier SpaceX market produced a much closer result. Hyperliquid perpetual futures were pricing SpaceX at roughly $170 per share immediately before its June listing, while the stock traded above $176 during its first session before closing around $161.

That result suggested that crypto traders could sometimes provide a surprisingly accurate indication of first-day public-market demand.

Unitree's Market Was Much Smaller

The difference in market size is important when comparing Unitree with SpaceX.

SpaceX's Hyperliquid contract reached approximately $216 million in open interest before its IPO, with more than $150 million in trading volume during a 24-hour period. Unitree's roughly $29 million in open positions represents a much smaller pool of capital.

Lower liquidity means that relatively small amounts of buying or selling can have a larger impact on the synthetic price. It also makes the market more vulnerable to sharp moves and forced liquidations.

Crypto Traders Correctly Spotted Unitree's Potential

The Unitree market nevertheless demonstrated that crypto traders were significantly more bullish on the robotics company than its IPO pricing suggested.

The IPO was priced at a valuation near $9 billion, while the perpetual contract placed Unitree closer to $38 billion before public trading began. The actual opening valuation of about $66 billion then exceeded even the crypto market's aggressive estimate.

That makes the episode an unusual case where crypto traders identified a potentially underpriced IPO but still failed to fully anticipate the demand that emerged once the stock began trading.

Pre-IPO Perpetuals Could Become a New Crypto Market

The Unitree and SpaceX examples suggest that perpetual futures could become an increasingly important way for crypto traders to speculate on private or soon-to-be-public companies.

These markets can operate continuously and allow traders to establish positions before traditional exchanges open. They also create a mechanism for discovering prices when conventional equity markets are not yet available.

But the Unitree example shows that these contracts should not automatically be treated as reliable predictions of future stock prices. Liquidity, leverage, funding rates and the relatively small amount of capital behind some markets can produce substantial differences between synthetic and real-world valuations.

What Unitree's IPO Means for Crypto Traders

Unitree's debut demonstrates both the potential and the limitations of crypto-based pre-IPO price discovery.

Crypto traders were far more bullish than Unitree's IPO bankers, but the public market ultimately valued the company even higher. The gap shows that a synthetic perpetual can provide useful market information without necessarily producing an accurate forecast of the eventual stock price.

For traders, the biggest lesson is risk management. With high leverage and limited liquidity, a market can move dramatically before a trader's thesis has time to play out.

As more major companies approach public listings, the interaction between traditional equity markets and 24/7 crypto derivatives could become an increasingly important part of global price discovery.
