Bitcoin (BTC) and Tether’s USDT will begin trading on the Moscow Exchange (MOEX) in December, as Russia’s main bourse seeks to capture crypto volumes that domestic users currently execute overseas. The venue is subject to U.S. sanctions, and one of the listed assets, USDT, is issued by a firm that freezes wallets on the U.S. sanctions list.
The move signals a bid to repatriate cryptocurrency activity into Russia’s primary trading venue while navigating the constraints of international restrictions. It also brings a dollar-referenced stablecoin alongside bitcoin onto a sanctioned exchange, raising operational and compliance considerations for market participants and counterparties.
Why is Moscow Exchange listing Bitcoin and USDT in December?
The exchange aims to attract crypto trading that Russians conduct abroad back onto the domestic bourse. Listing Bitcoin and USDT provides exposure to a leading cryptocurrency and a dollar-referenced stablecoin, creating a familiar trading pair. The December timeline sets a near-term start for onshore access to these digital assets.
