Elon Musk’s X Ban in Brazil Disrupts Local Crypto Community

Brazil’s recent ban on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has sparked a heated dispute between billionaire Elon Musk and the Brazilian legal system, leaving the local crypto community in turmoil. The ban, implemented due to concerns over misinformation, has led to significant challenges for blockchain industry professionals, influencers, and companies reliant on the platform for communication and promotion.

The X Ban and Its Impact on the Crypto Industry

On August 30, Brazil's Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered the suspension of X, accusing it of promoting misinformation related to former President Jair Bolsonaro. The ban abruptly cut off nearly 22 million users, crippling one of X’s largest markets and causing a ripple effect across the crypto sector.

Victor Cioffi, a growth manager at Solana Superteam Brasil, emphasized the importance of X to the Brazilian crypto industry, explaining that the platform is widely used to engage with the global crypto community. “X is essential for reaching a worldwide audience. Without it, it's like losing an arm,” he said. The ban forces crypto professionals to choose between violating the law or scrambling to find alternative platforms.

Audience Loss and Financial Setbacks

X has long been the preferred platform for crypto professionals to share information, attract clients, and launch campaigns. Its loss has significantly reduced the reach of crypto firms and influencers. João Ferreira, co-founder and CEO of the decentralized finance (DeFi) app Picnic, revealed that his company had already lost half of its audience due to the ban. "As a founder, the inability to communicate with VCs and key figures has been a major blow,” Ferreira noted.

Similarly, Brazilian crypto educator and influencer Casta Crypto said his audience had shrunk by two-thirds since the ban. X was his primary channel for engaging with new projects and initiatives. Another prominent Brazilian crypto influencer, who requested anonymity, expressed anxiety over the situation, stating they had been unable to sleep for days due to concerns over losing their audience.

Searching for Alternatives

In response to the ban, Brazilian crypto users have been exploring alternative platforms, including YouTube, Substack, Instagram, Threads, Farcaster, Nostr, and Bluesky, which has reportedly gained over a million new users since the ban. However, many in the community, including Casta Crypto, have found it difficult to replicate the same network dynamics and engagement offered by X.

“The Brazilian community has not only lost its audience but also its ability to coordinate and benefit from the powerful network effects of X,” Casta Crypto lamented.

Conferences and DAOs Feel the Impact

Crypto conferences and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) have also been severely affected by the X blackout. Daniela Zschaber, a product manager at Blockful and organizer of the ETH Floripa conference, expressed concern about the loss of crucial data and network effects. With the event scheduled for February 2025, she said, "We’ve lost important data like event engagement, potential sponsors, and interested partners."

Zschaber further noted that smaller events, such as an upcoming conference in Curitiba, have seen a significant drop in attendance due to the lack of coordination tools. DAOs, which rely on digital platforms for communication, have also been hampered. Although many DAOs use Discord for day-to-day coordination, X was essential for real-time updates, making the process slower and less efficient.

The loss of X as a communication tool also poses risks to crypto holders. Many crypto protocols use the platform to alert users to security breaches and hacks. Without real-time updates, Brazilian users may be more vulnerable to scams, as was the case with the DeFi staking protocol Ether.fi hack.

Moving Abroad as a Last Resort

As the ban continues, some in the Brazilian crypto industry are considering relocating abroad. Ferreira admitted that the X ban was the "last straw" for him, and he is actively exploring opportunities outside Brazil to avoid the difficulties created by the restriction.

The Free Speech Debate

The controversy surrounding the X ban has sparked a broader debate in Brazil about free speech and the balance between state sovereignty and individual rights. While some view the ban as necessary to prevent the spread of misinformation, others argue that it stifles free expression and innovation.

The crypto community, in particular, finds itself caught in this battle, with its growth and connectivity at stake. As discussions continue, the future of X in Brazil remains uncertain, and the local crypto industry is left grappling with the fallout from the ban.
