First introduced nearly 30 years ago, the HTTP 402 status code was intended for web-based payments but remained largely unused. Coinbase has now implemented the concept through its x402 payments protocol, enabling automated services to receive crypto payments without manual approval.


This capability means AI agents could autonomously:

Leffew and Murr likened the process to a vending machine. When an AI agent encounters an HTTP 402 request, it signs a transaction and sends payment in one seamless exchange — no accounts, no intermediaries.


“One round trip. Like a vending machine. No accounts required,” the developers said.


This effectively transforms APIs into wallet-aware services, streamlining machine-to-machine commerce.

The Coinbase team emphasized that Ethereum’s trustless settlement layer and smart contract capabilities make it the ideal blockchain for HTTP 402-based payments.
