Bitcoin Miner Nscale Loses Microsoft Deal on 50MW Power Lag

Bitcoin miner offshoot Nscale has lost a Microsoft AI data center contract in Loughton, Essex, after the local grid warned that 50 megawatts of power may not be available until the early-to-mid 2030s. The site was slated to host 23,040 Nvidia chips and deliver capacity by early 2027.

Bitcoin Miner Nscale Loses Microsoft Deal on 50MW Power Lag

Nscale, a company spun out of bitcoin mining, has lost a planned Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) AI data center mandate in Loughton, Essex, after the region’s grid operator said sufficient capacity may not be available until the early-to-mid 2030s. The facility had been set to deliver 50 megawatts of compute to Microsoft’s Azure cloud by early 2027, powered by 23,040 Nvidia chips.

The setback underscores how power constraints are reshaping timelines for energy-intensive AI infrastructure. Nscale announced the project last year alongside Microsoft, Nvidia and OpenAI, positioning the site as a rapid expansion node for cloud AI workloads. UK Power Networks, which runs the local grid, informed Nscale that adequate capacity may not arrive for roughly another decade, prompting Microsoft to walk away from the plan.

Why did the Microsoft–Nscale AI project collapse?

The project unraveled because the local grid could not guarantee the 50MW required for the data center until the early-to-mid 2030s, far beyond the early 2027 target. With a delay approaching 10 years, Microsoft exited rather than rebase timelines or redesign capacity around uncertain delivery windows.

Nscale’s Loughton site was scoped for 23,040 Nvidia processors to support Azure AI growth, reflecting the surge in demand for power-dense compute. But grid lead times have stretched, and priority access to capacity remains tight. Without a credible path to energization within the original schedule, the business case collapsed. The decision highlights a practical constraint: even well-capitalized hyperscale ambitions are captive to regional transmission and distribution availability.

What does this mean for bitcoin miners pivoting to AI?

Power access is the gating factor for miners seeking AI diversification, not just capex or chip procurement. Nscale’s experience shows that converting or expanding sites to host GPU clusters can be derailed by grid bottlenecks measured in years, making delivery risk as material as price or performance risk.

Bitcoin miners often target locations with favorable electricity pricing and existing interconnections, advantages that can translate to AI hosting—when capacity is actually deliverable. Where grid operators signal multi-year delays, miners face stranded site risk, escalating carrying costs, and the potential loss of anchor customers. The episode reinforces a due-diligence checklist that starts with firm grid commitments and energization dates before hardware orders or customer contracts.

What should investors and customers watch next?

Concrete grid milestones—connection offers, substation upgrades, and dated energization commitments—are the decisive signals. Without those, schedules aiming for 2027 or earlier will struggle to withstand decade-scale delays, and customers may reallocate workloads to regions with faster interconnection.

For miners and infrastructure operators, flexibility in site selection and phased capacity plans can mitigate timeline risk. For hyperscalers and AI customers, diversifying geography and power sources remains prudent while regional grids work through upgrade backlogs. In the absence of timely capacity, contracts will continue to favor projects with verified infrastructure paths.

The Nscale outcome is a reminder that AI compute supply chains extend well beyond chips: substations, feeders and permitting sit squarely on the project critical path. Until those links are secured, even marquee partnerships can unwind.
