Bitcoin's 11-month correction may be approaching its end, according to VanEck's latest on-chain analysis. The asset manager reported that 8 of 12 capitulation signals have now fired, while long-term holders shed 356,000 BTC in the past 30 days—a pattern historically associated with market bottoms.

VanEck's mid-August Bitcoin Chaincheck report, authored by Head of Digital Assets Research Matthew Sigel and Senior Investment Analyst Nathan Frankovitz, identified multiple technical and on-chain indicators suggesting exhaustion among sellers. The firm tracks 12 distinct capitulation metrics across price action, holder behavior, and market sentiment—two-thirds of which have now triggered.

What Are VanEck's 12 Capitulation Signals?

VanEck's capitulation framework measures seller exhaustion through 12 quantitative indicators spanning price drawdown severity, long-term holder distribution, exchange flows, and sentiment extremes. When a majority of these signals fire simultaneously, historical data suggests Bitcoin is nearing a cyclical bottom. The current reading of 8 active signals marks the highest concentration since the 2022 bear market lows.

Long-term holders—wallets holding Bitcoin for more than 155 days—distributed 356,000 BTC ($38.2 billion at current prices) over the past 30 days. This represents the fastest rate of long-term holder capitulation since November 2022, when Bitcoin traded near $16,000. VanEck's analysis indicates that rapid long-term holder distribution typically occurs in the final stages of corrections, as committed investors exit positions after extended drawdowns.

The asset manager's report highlighted several additional metrics supporting the capitulation thesis. Bitcoin's price has declined 38% from its January 2025 all-time high near $109,000, placing the drawdown within the 35-50% range historically associated with mid-cycle corrections rather than bear markets. The MVRV Z-Score, which measures the ratio between market value and realized value, has fallen into the "undervalued" zone below 1.0 for the first time since October 2023.

Why Does Long-Term Holder Selling Signal a Bottom?

Long-term holder capitulation functions as a contrarian indicator because it represents the transfer of Bitcoin from weak hands to strong hands at depressed prices. When committed holders who survived previous corrections finally sell after months of drawdown, it indicates maximum pain and sentiment exhaustion. This supply transfer to new buyers at lower cost bases historically creates the foundation for subsequent rallies.

VanEck noted that exchange netflows have shifted neutral after months of persistent inflows, suggesting selling pressure from long-term holders is being absorbed by demand rather than accumulating on trading platforms. The firm's analysis showed that whale wallets holding 1,000+ BTC have increased their aggregate holdings by 2.1% since June, indicating institutional accumulation during the correction.

The asset manager stopped short of declaring an immediate bottom, emphasizing that capitulation signals can remain active for weeks before price reversal occurs. Historical precedent from the 2018-2019 and 2022 corrections showed that the final 2-4 capitulation signals typically fire within 30-60 days of the ultimate low, creating a window where additional downside remains possible even as technical conditions improve.

What Should Bitcoin Investors Watch Next?

VanEck identified four remaining capitulation signals that have not yet triggered: miner capitulation as measured by hash ribbon crossovers, retail sentiment reaching extreme fear below 10 on the Crypto Fear & Greed Index, derivatives funding rates turning persistently negative, and short-term holder supply reaching multi-year lows. The activation of these final signals would complete the capitulation framework and provide higher confidence in a sustained bottom formation.

Bitcoin MVRV Z-Score — Glassnode

Bitcoin traded at $107,200 at press time, down 1.8% over the past 24 hours but holding above the psychologically significant $105,000 support level. The asset has consolidated in a tight $104,000-$110,000 range for three weeks following its initial correction from January highs. VanEck's report suggested that a break above $112,000 with accompanying volume expansion would confirm the end of the correction phase and initiate a new accumulation cycle ahead of the next halving epoch in 2028.
